Meet the Author/Illustrator ...Yvette VanDerBrink, the “Lil’ Nordstrom’s Gal”, was raised on a dairy farm west of Garretson, South Dakota. She grew up with hard work, cars, and was a Tom Boy. Yvette’s parents, Art and Marie Nordstrom, started Nordstrom’s Auto Recyclers on the family farm. As the business grew, Yvette wrote and recorded crazy radio commercials under the name “The Lil’ Nordstrom’s Gal”, for the family business. The name carried over to her writing. Yvette has written many short stories about growing up on the farm, motherhood, and being a lady auctioneer. Yvette lives on a farm in Southwest Minnesota with her husband Steve VanDerBrink and their two kids, Emily and Johnathon.

In 2001 after a word from a prophetic minister, Yvette started VanDerBrink Auctions, LLC. Yvette is an Auctioneer and Real Estate Broker and with Faith, Determination, and hard work Yvette has conducted auctions in nine states and specializes in Collector Cars and Parts auctions. She also brings her farming background into selling land and farms at auction. It seems she finds no auction is too large or small, conducting auctions of all kinds. Yvette was in Colorado in November 2007 booking a collector car auction when she discovered a lump in her right breast. That lump started a whirlwind of doctor appointments. Yvette was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in December 2007. It was the same Faith and Determination that helped Yvette grew up with and in her auction business that got her through surgeries, weeks of chemotherapy, and radiation. Yvette came up with the idea for a children’s book while visiting with her niece, Madisen Nordstrom about her bald head. Yvette came home and wrote the book and encouraged her daughter Emily to draw the pictures for the book. Yvette used many of her personal experiences with Breast Cancer for the book. Yvette felt that there was a need to bring a “kid-friendly” way to talk about Breast Cancer. “Cancer is such a trying time for any family. There are so many emotions and decisions. It not only affects the patient, but everyone around them,” she says. She hopes that this book can be used as a tool for Families, Teachers, and Medical Personnel to help explain to kids about going through cancer with their Family. Yvette completed treatments October 14th, 2008. She stayed active with her auction business conducting 19 auctions in five states while undergoing treatments. Yvette looks forward to a long life filled with Family, Faith and to further her auction career and more writing. She hopes that her experiences will help others.
